How to Repair a Quartz Watch?

Quartz watches have become popular watches among collectors since their introduction to modern life in the 1970s. Quartz technology uses a crystal to electronically control an oscillator to produce accurate signals that maintain accurate time. This makes quartz watches incredibly reliable and they are also relatively inexpensive to manufacture. Quartz watches are very collectible, even though LED watches have replaced them lately. A worn or damaged quartz watch is simple to repair, and individual components are still widely available.

Things you need
Quartz watch
Open case
0.8 mm to 1.0 mm screwdriver
replacement rod

Replacement spring
New battery
Can of compressed air
Replacement belt

Perform a visual examination of the quartz watch and look for obvious signs of wear or damage. Check if all hands are operational and the wind of the rod to ensure that it engages properly. The stem must be able to move the time and minutes if it is fully functional. Remember that quartz watches work using a battery so the stem does not have to be hand wound.

Open the back of the quartz watch using the case of a watchmaker's first match or a small precision screwdriver between 0.8 mm and 1.0 mm. Take extreme care when removing the backplate to avoid scratches. Remove the old battery and dispose of it responsibly. Add a replacement battery and check the face of the quartz watch to ensure that the second hand moves.

Leave the backplate off and look to the inside left side of the watch mechanism to locate the rod. Take a small screwdriver from your professional watch repair kit and use it to gently push down on the spring to release the rod mechanism and remove it completely. Insert the new rod and spring into position and push in firmly. Make sure the new strain is able to move on time and minutes when pulled into an extended position.

Take a bottle of compressed air and lightly blow inside the quartz watch to remove any dust or debris. Place the plate in position and secure by snapping it into place or reinserting the removed screws.

Finish repairing the quartz watch by removing the strap pins with the help of the small precision screwdriver for watch. Discard the old strap and place the strap markers in each end of the new strap. Attach the new strap to the body of the watch, using the small screwdriver to manipulate the pins in the correct position. The quartz watch should now work and is ready to wear.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS:
Even a waterproof sports watch should not go in the shower, the temperature variation can damage it.
Do not sleep with your watch, an untimely shock (bedside table, headboard) is so quickly arrived.
Avoid contact with chemicals, including perfumes or cosmetics that may attack the seal or discolor the watch.
Keep your watch away from magnetic fields.
At sea, do not bathe with your watch. Salt reduces the tightness, the shine of your watch and attacks the leather bracelets. If you have forgotten to take off your watch, rinse with warm water after bathing.

CLEANING A WATERPROOF WATCH, A DIVE WATCH:
Before starting cleaning, check that the crown is engaged.
Attention, if your case is waterproof, the bracelet is not.
Use a soft brush (toothbrush), slightly damp, soap and scrub gently.
Dry using a soft, non-abrasive cloth.

CLEAN WATCH NOT WATERPROOF:
Take care not to expose your wearable watch to moisture more than necessary
Detach the bracelet from its case
Use a soft, slightly damp cloth to rub the case
A soft brush will be useful for more stubborn soils
Use the soft damp cloth again to complete the cleaning
Spend a dry cloth on your watch for drying.

GIVING LIFE TO THE GLASS OF YOUR WATCH:
In order to erase the bumps that have occurred over time and other micro-scratches, use half a dab of toothpaste on a soft pad and rub without forcing the glass concentrically. The toothpaste will smoothly polish the glass. Take care not to put toothpaste anywhere else than on the glass of your watch. The results are surprising.
In case of deep scratches, only the change of the glass will be possible.

MAINTAIN WATCH BRACELET:
Metal bracelet or rubber: if you clean quartz bracelet watches, cleaning with a soft brush and soap will be sufficient. Dry with a soft, dry cloth.
Leather strap: use clear water and very little soap on a soft brush to degrease the bracelet (outer and inner side). Emphasize the seams. A soft cloth will be used to rinse the bracelet. Let it air dry at room temperature. It is advisable not to wear a leather strap every day to allow, from time to time, the body moisture to evaporate.
